We attended the NY Giant’s Moms Football Clinic at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, NJ with about 100 other Moms. As a mom who is very afraid, and sadly I believe has now passed along that fear to her child I was eager to learn more of the Heads Up program.
The heads Up program is geared to:
Coaching education and certification
Proper Equipment fitting
Heat Preparedness and hydration
Player Safety Coach
Heads Up tackling technique
Concussion Recognition and Response
In addition they taught us the benefits of our children participating in youth sports:
- such as reducing the risk of becoming overweight
- increased opportunity to make new friends
- the likelihood of being physically active later in life,
- higher levels of self-esteem
- higher high school graduation rates
Soon after the discussion we headed on to the indoor field at Quest Diagnostics Training Center for a demo on proper equipment fitting as well as some drills!
After burning off calories we were ready to refuel, luckily Stevie Brown, his mom Karla Brown and the New York Giants Executive Chef Angelo Basilone, gave us a live cooking demo of Turkey chili. Karla being the mom of the team truly was the quicker picker upper, she was armed and ready to attack the spills the men on this team were making with the Bounty, NFL prints of course! Side note the Turkey Chili was delicious, as well as the Pumpkin Whoopie Pies and you can find the recipes on our Pinterest board.
Majority of the Moms in attendance were Moms to little ones who play football themselves and benefited from the information shared. Football Safety Clinics are ongoing and you should check with your local NFL team.
In addition you can educate yourself as the parent of a little football player, on the standards in football and ensure a better, safer game by visiting and adhering to this Heads Up checklists.
