There are certainly days when I feel like the kids homework is energy wasted on the most random information. I am sure you can agree. However, reading is never time wasted. It is a time to explore without leaving the comforts of your favorite comfiest nook in your home. As I create a reading nook for each child, we will be sharing a few of our favorite books with you. Eventually having the kids share their opinions of the books they are reading themselves.

My name is Chase Cooper, and I’m a 6th grade ninja. It’s my first day at a different school and the only person I know is my cousin, Zoe (but she might be a little too cool for me). I was just another scrawny kid until a group of ninjas recruited me into their clan. It was a world of trouble I wasn’t prepared for, which is why I kept this diary (or “chronicle” as my dad would call it) – to warn other kids about the dangers of becoming a ninja. They say history is destined to repeat itself… well, not if I can help it.
Kids Ages 7-12

Should Sophie break her promise and tell on him?
Kids ages 8 – 12 Grade Level 3 – 6
Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood “wishtree”—people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red’s branches. Along with a crow named Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red’s hollows, this wishtree watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red’s experience as a wishtree is more important than ever.
Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, this is Katherine Applegate at her very best—writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view.
This book has Common Core connections.
