With Halloween approaching, it can be stressful for parents to think about their teen or tween being out and about. And even though the trick-or-treating years might be long gone, there’s still a good chance that your child is going to be out hanging with their friends or finding some other fun activity to do on Halloween night.
The excitement of Halloween is definitely here, but we don’t have to give into the chaos; Join us as we try these ideas instead.
Check-in and pinpoint their exact location
One of the spookiest nights of the year is upon us. Like me, I’m sure you are feeling extra concerned about keeping track of where your kids are. Most likely, they will be out scouring the neighborhood, going door-to-door for candy, or scaring their friends at a costume party. Theres an app for that! Find my iPhone is free and can track and ping your kid’s phone quickly. However, if you want to be a little more discreet and not embarrass them in front of their peers, Our Pact does the same trick.
Have the Social Media Conversation
Kids can post things they might not usually feel comfortable sharing when the excitement is high. Explain to your kids that the platform will have a copy internally despite their ability to delete a social media post or comment. Therefore, it’s easier to create a rule not to post while others can influence them on what to post.
Talk to your teen about the importance of being aware
For us and this generation of smartphone users, safety is about being aware of your surroundings. So tell your teen/tween to be mindful of where they are at all times, allowing them to react if need be quickly.
Don’t go anywhere alone on Halloween night.
This is true for any time of the year, but it’s just as necessary during the Halloween evening. With hundreds of “strangers” dressed in costumes wandering the neighborhood, the thought of trying to keep an eye on your child can be overwhelming.
Now is an excellent time to educate your teen/tween on the importance of never being alone on Halloween night. Make sure they know to give you a call to come and get them; if they need to leave a party, head outside, or even walk home from a friend’s house.
Take the time to educate, plan, prepare and get in sync to make this the most memorable Halloween night ever!
Be Safe Friends!
